Darfur’s Peace Talks

of

In July 2010 the mediators of the Darfur peace talks hosted in Doha a consultation for hundreds of civil society representatives and refugee camp leaders. The consultation was meant as a way to advise the parties to the negotiations.

The government and Liberation and Justice Movement have progressed negotiations past several critical landmarks, including a ceasefire and consideration of detailed draft proposals. However, the LJM coalition of factions does not have extensive military strength and the peace talks remain boycotted by the rebel factions of Abdel Wahid Al Nur (SLM) and Khalil Ibrahim (JEM). A pause in the talks is expected during Ramadan. The government is keen to sign a deal before October, according to remarks made by their top negotiator.
