<--break->Violence has gripped Darfur since 2003. Rebels of the Justice and Equality Movement, who are thought to have at least several hundred vehicles, have clashed repeatedly with the government since February when they were expelled from their rear base in Chad.

JEM has dispersed its forces throughout several areas of Darfur and into Southern Kordofan.
